Franz Franz Hubert Letters — Introduction

The following letter exchange between Grandfather Franz Hubert and Russian relatives reflects the mutual concerns of the larger family between 1926 and 1933.

The letters reflect the daily life in Russia at the time. Since some time has passed since the letters were written, not every detail is legible, even to extent that the writers' names may be lost. Perhaps now that the letters are being reviewed by readers both in Canada and abroad, some of the missing information can be retrieved.

After the death of our grandfather in 1964, the letters were passed on to my father, Jacob F. Hubert.

After my father's death in 1972, my mother gave the letters to Lorina Marsch, who lived in Winnipeg at the time. The letters are now housed in the Centre of Mennonite Brethren Studies, from whence they have been copied for use by the family, first for the 2013 family reunion in Brazil, and now for the family reunion in Canada.

The letters were originally written in Gothic script, but were transcribed by a German relative, through the help of Erwin Hübert in Germany. Our sincere thanks to both!
